Swedish experiences

Stockholm

Below you will find:

  • the presentation of the famous trunk lines of the city : 4 lines of specific blue busses are using buslanes and priority at crossings : they carry from 24000 to 57 000 passengers/day.
  • the presentation made by the Public Transport authority, AB Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL).

Gothenburg

Traversée giratoire Gothenburg

In this city, the market share of Public Transport is 24%, however it is 40% in the other major cities of Sweden, how could they reach it ? The city has to double its PT trips. This city has already 11 tram lines. 4 trunk lines were created. The idea of launching a BHLS network with bi-articulated buses) was born because of a lack of money. They carries now 24 000 passengers/day with 3 minutes headway at peak hours for the line 16, 10 000 with 5 minutes headway for the 17 and 20 000 for the lines 18+19 with headways of 5 minutes (one line, split at the end).

Below you will find the two presentations about Gothenburg made at the plenary meeting in Lund:

  • The long term transport strategy of the region
  • The description of the main line 16 with bi-articulated buses.

Jönköping

Jönköping

This city is in the middle between the three biggest Swedish cities : Stockholm, Göteborg and Malmö. It is build around three lakes. Between the two biggests is the city center, and there is only a little space, so that it’s complicated to deal with both transportation and urbanism. Those 10 last years, the city built a new bridge over one lake, so that more space was liberated for housing, trade and services in the . This new master plan has integrated a hierarchised bus network, two main BHLS lines (the yellow and the red) that crosses now the center since 1996. A third line (green) started in 2001 to complete this network. ITS has been integrated on these 3 lines since 1997 (waiting time for next departure at stops, priority at all crossings).

Below, the presentation made in Jönköping by Ingemar Lundin:

Lund

Lund

There are in Lund 107 000 inhabitants (urban area), in which 35 000 are students. The modal share of pedestrians and bicycles on all trips is 50%, and 33% for bikes only. It is the 12th Swedish town. The municipality has set up a strategy for a sustainable transports system within 2030. 18 indicators are used and targets are given for 2013 and 2030. The bus line we visited is the Lundalänken (Lund link), infrastructure measures encouraging BHLS lines offering a high level of service. It starts at the central railway station, where 35 000 people commute every day (with a very big P+B). Then this line crosses the hospital to go to the university area. The main urban part of the line ends where new industrial areas and housing plans are expected soon according to the master plan. Regional busses are also using this line infrastructure to go for the numerous neighbouring villages. Started in 2003, this line doubled its ridership in three years, and carries today 6000 passengers/day. The line cost 20 millions € for 6 km, with dedicated lanes only if needed. This infrastructure design has integrated “tram” specifications, so that a tramway can be built easily on this platform in case of higher ridership in the future: the bridges are high enough, the holds wide enough and so on.
